Apple iPhone to be sold UNLOCKED

One of the rather interesting marketing ideas I’ve read about is the idea that the iPhone won’t be tied to a specific carrier. Instead, it will be sold “unlocked”, allowing you to insert a SIM card from any carrier. Could this be the next iPod?
